Nuevo Sol means a new beginning

 

 The name “Nuevo Sol” is inspired by the new beginning that this restaurant brings to lead chef Gilberto Monroy and his family in the same way the sun brings a new beginning to each morning. Gilberto was born and raised in a pueblo called San Juan Jaripeo in Guanajuato Mexico and immigrated to Berkeley in 1988. Shortly after moving to Berkeley, he began working as a dishwasher at Bette’s Oceanview Diner. With the support of Bette herself, he was inspired to become a chef and was quickly fascinated by the art of cooking and the different flavors he could create. In addition to working at Bette’s, Gilberto has run his own catering business for over 18 years.

Gilberto is proud to open Nuevo Sol as not only a restaurant but also a space for the community to come together.
